Medical Alarms in St. Louis MO: Grateful For Senior

Being Grateful For Your Senior Adult — The “Gift Of Time” Is Priceless!

In this time of social distancing, remote learning and meetings, washing and sanitizing EVERYTHING, we have basically been forced to change virtually every part of our former lifestyle. But in this time of change, please give thanks for our many blessings and remember our Senior adults.

For the most part, many of them have seen far worse than the troubles of today. They have experienced wars, “Great Depressions,” famines, and yes, even a possible pandemic in their lifetime. They all have been introduced, firsthand, to death and loss. It is very important to note that at this stage in their life, NOTHING is more important to them than friends and family. It is the social interaction with friends and family that fuels their drive to thrive.

For those that still have living parents, and are reading this, reach out to them OFTEN and just share some time with them. For those of us whose parents are gone, “adopt” a Senior adult who might not have family nearby, or who has little to no regular contact with others. It takes just a few minutes to be kind, share a memory, or some food or other resources. But most importantly, share love and care for them. They need this as much as, if not more than, air to breathe and food to eat.

To a Senior adult, ISOLATION is a cruel punishment for a crime that was never committed. And perhaps far worse, a sentence that has no foreseeable end from where we stand today. “In-person visits” are likely forbidden, so be creative. You can be a pen pal and write to them. You can send pictures or music. You can use Facetime or Skype to share time with them. Do whatever is necessary to break their isolation and lift their spirits. Your reward is that you may very well see them smile, laugh, cry, or simply LIVE again. Perhaps they will, at least for a short time, forget the isolation they are forced to endure.

Everyone reading this article has what is needed to invest in a Senior adult — TIME. We are all so busy with life, yet we must not be so busy that the ones who built all that we have surrounding us, (all of the freedoms we enjoy, the life we are able to choose to live), go without our investment of TIME. The precious commodity that each of us, in turn, will see grow in importance and value with each passing day. I ask you to invest in a Senior adult before it is too late and the opportunity is gone for good. You will be AMAZED at the return on your investment.

Les Tainter
Regional Manager

Personal emergency response system in South County MO: Senior Falls

Why A Medical Alert System Is Worth Taking Seriously

Did you know that 1 of every 3 seniors, aged 65 or older, will have a fall this year? Do you know that 80% of all falls occur within or immediately around a person’s home? Have you (or someone you know) fallen and laid there for hours or days, because you were unable to get help?

These questions give great concern to Linda Bass, as long-time southeast Missouri resident and owner of Around the Clock Medical Alarms.

In 1972, Linda’s mother died and she was “adopted” by her retired grandparents. This situation is more prevalent in today’s society, but was unheard of at that time. As the primary caregiver for her grandparents, Linda lived the same challenges that families face today in helping to care for their aging loved ones. She has worked her entire adult life in the medical field by working in various capacities in hospital settings and medical offices, was owner of Comfort Keepers in Cape Girardeau, MO from 2000-2005, and was a marketing representative for two local hospice agencies. It is obvious that she has a special affinity for the elderly.

“I know that I worried when my grandparents did not answer the telephone, because my mind always went to the unthinkable….”, states Bass. In 2012, her father-in-law suffered from COPD and heart issues. Again, she found herself facing those same kind of fears, because he was alone during the day. “What if…worried me!”

After exploring the local options available, she found that none could meet her dads needs. Due to the size of the pendant, she knew he would not wear it. additionally, she found that some providers have limited service areas. “That,” says Bass, “is when I decided to explore other options and eventually started Around the Clock Medical Alarms. I needed to feel security that Dad was okay to be alone while I was at work. A medical alarm could help me to feel better about that situation.”

According to Ruth Dockins, former public information director at Aging Matters, (previously Southeast Missouri Area Agency on Aging), “If you live alone or are concerned about elderly loved ones who still live at home, a medical alert system is worth taking seriously. The thing I would look for is one where you didn’t have to sign a contract”, she says. “One where you can pay on a monthly basis and there is no contract and no hookup fees. One where I could just bring into the house and turn it on. I would want one that was answered by a live person.”

Around the Clock Medical Alarms is just what Linda and Ruth ordered. Since they are a nationwide provider, they can help anyone, anywhere in the U.S. and have rate plans to meet any budget. NO contract means that it can be used on a short-term basis — even post operatively! “No one has a time ticker or a crystal ball,” muses Bass. “So, how can an elderly or ill person be asked to commit to a 3 year contract? This is just unreasonable!”

Bass concludes, “My goal is to help provide my clients (and their families) the peace of mind knowing that help is available at the push of a button 24/7, 365 — regardless of whether they can speak or not — Around the Clock.”

Senior Care Spotlight: Medicare Open Enrollment

Medical Alarms in St. Louis MO: Healthcare Solutions

Medical Alarms in St. Louis MO: Healthcare Solutions

This Medicare open enrollment is quite different, to say the least…. Years ago, I drove from the “big city of St. Louis” down I-55 to rural southeast Missouri to meet a prospective client on his farm – I thought we’d discuss business in his home. When I arrived, he looked at my high heels, tossed me a pair of boots, and said, “C’mon!” I asked where we were going and he said, “The cows don’t milk themselves.”

OMG! There were so many cows – really, only about eight. He showed me what to do and I proceeded to milk cows as we talked about everything under the sun until he said, “now ain’t ya going to talk to me about long term care insurance?” I had forgotten the reason I was there!

This customer, now a client for over 20 years, taught me so many life lessons that day and in the years to come!

I spoke to him yesterday, now 85-years-old, and he said he’s been thinking about moving into Assisted Living and wanted to ask me questions about how his long term care policy would pay.

This year’s phone review of his Medicare and LTC wasn’t the same as being with him on his farm, with the cows, wearing “my” boots, and sitting on a barn stool next to each other with a cow in between.

I was missing the connection of our pre-COVID lives when I happened to see the following article:
https://www.cnn.com/2020/10/15/world/cows-cattle-communication-scn/index.html that reminded me of my own experience so long ago. I agree with the cows, I would rather cow-MOO-nicate too!

In closing, I would recommend that everyone re-evaluate their personal situation during Open Enrollment.  Sometimes seniors feel that their only option is to move out of their homes into an Assisted Living Facility, like my farmer friend.  When you are considering making changes to your health benefits or living situation, due to physical changes or health concerns, consider the benefit of a Personal Emergency Response System.  Now is the perfect time to determine what is best for your current situational needs.  Like insurance, a medic alert is something that you put in place and hope you never have to use it.  Several years ago, we set up my parents as clients of Around the Clock Medical Alarms.  My mother has since passed away, but Dad is still a customer.  The protection from their service, makes us both feel better knowing he is never alone and IF he needs help, he can get help — “Around the Clock.”

Medical Alarms in St. Louis MO: National Preparedness Month

September is National Preparedness Month. Do you have an emergency plan?

Emergencies never make appointments. Emergencies do not age discriminate.
Do you know someone who has a medical condition that would warrant the ability to get help quickly in an emergency? Do they struggle with the challenges of everyday living? Are they needing or currently utilizing a home care agency? If so, they are potentially appropriate for a #medicalert.

Medical Alarms in St. Louis MO: National Preparedness Month

Medical Alarms in St. Louis MO: National Preparedness Month

An AroundTheClockMedicalAlarms.com system is with them “around the clock” — so our subscribers are NEVER ALONE!

You do not have to be elderly or falling to be “alarm appropriate!” Many of our clients have chronic health issues, such as Heart Disease, Strokes, Respiratory Disease, Cancer, and/or Diabetes. These conditions would warrant medical attention in a timely fashion. Additionally, they may be living alone, recently widowed, or their children are concerned about their safety and well-being.

Following are four testimonies from our clients who have an emergency plan in place; who are not the typical “elder person who falls.”

~ Judy S., MO
“I just can’t begin to say how pleased I am with the service we have received. My sister has subscribed to your service for almost 2 years now.

It was a difficult decision to make for her, because she is only 49, but having brain cancer, she realized what a comfort it is to her caregivers to know that she is “never alone.”
The local staff is MORE than pleasant, and truly care about all of us, not just the patient, but her loved ones, as well.

Thanks, Around the Clock, for making our lives a little easier during such a difficult time!”

~ Amy B., MO
“When I was going through some health issues, I used Around the Clock Medical Alarms so I would feel safer at home. At the time, I lived alone and was really afraid of what would happen should I have a seizure. Having the button made my situation safer, and I knew I could get help if I needed it with the quick press of a button. I highly recommend their services!”

~ Elizabeth B., MO
“I have Parkinson’s and am not elderly. I waited until falling two times in 10 days to call Around the Clock Medical Alarms. Linda and Les were helpful on the phone and came to my house the day of my call. I feel better prepared that help will be close by when I fall next. Thanks!”

~ Ron W., FL
“I’m 52. I have been diagnosed with MS & Multiple Myeloma and my mobility has become very strained. We have become very worried about being outside the home and even inside my own home. With Around the Clock’s Medical Solutions, my wife and I are now secure in the fact that if needed, they are never more than pushing a button; away from help. Which I needed last week. Linda & Les are extremely kind and professional, adding the ever missing “human element “to everything and everyone they talk to. I highly recommend them for all your medical alarms needs. They are simply in two words; THE BEST!!!”

Statistically, a medical alert type system can enable people to stay in their homes longer, because they don’t become the statistic of someone who has an event and cannot get help for hours … or days.

If you, or someone you know, suffers from a medical condition (that would warrant a fast response during an emergency situation) let us help you to keep them independent AND safe!

Senior Care Spotlight: To Sell Or Not To Sell….

Have you ever met a real estate agent who supports an older adult’s desire to stay put (not sell their home) in lieu of moving to a senior living community)? Well, you have now! It’s not great for his business, but it’s good for the soul.

Ted Gottlieb

Ted Gottlieb

Ted Gottlieb holds the distinction of being the only Missouri Licensed Real Estate Broker who’s also a Certified Senior Advisor®(CSA®). Ted earns his living selling real estate. He’s a Certified Residential Specialist (CRS) – a distinction earned by only 3% of real estate agents nationally.

As a CSA®, Ted’s tasked with putting your needs before his own, providing the information you need to make educated decisions. Informed decisions, the first time! Ted is the Founder of The Senior Learning Institute – providing in-person and on-line resources for seniors and their loved one – totally FREE of charge. (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCbGOr9tL81_cUoNSDcixd6w?view_as=subscriber) We asked Ted to share more about his unique and warm approach to helping folks just like you. Here’s what we shared with us.

“I’m on a mission to advocate and protect our seniors. Almost 90% of seniors want to stay put. Often, home is where they should be – especially if they can do so independently. If not, with the right support system in place, it can still make sense. How I’m first introduced to the senior is interesting. Sometimes, a senior living community refers me as someone who can ease the transition process. Other times, it’s a care manager, estate planning attorney, financial advisor, senior living community locator service that calls me in to determine the value of the home and eventually get it sold (no matter it’s condition).

We sit down (in person or by phone), take stock as to where you are and where you want to be. Together, we discover what’s in your best interest and provide you the resources to accomplish that. (https://www.spreaker.com/show/straight-forward-real-estate)

The way I position my services is that I’m a very productive real estate agent who’s goal is to sell the home for as much as possible (when you’re ready – if ever) while providing a turnkey solution to getting through the maze of issues associated with aging. If there’s a property to sell, then I do that and do that well. If not, that’s fine too. I’m here to help – FREE!

I act as a FREE case manager of sorts. Asking questions and referring to professionals who can assist with most any aging issue – Home Modifications/Repairs/Maintenance, Home Safety, Decluttering/Organizing, ‘Junk’ Removal, Transportation, Care Management, Medical Issues, Financial Planning, Reverse Mortgages, Medicare Plans, VA Benefits, Bill Paying, Moving, Estate Sales – you name it.

The value that I add comes from hands-on experience and professional training. I have all the senior’s real estate designations known to mankind (CSHP, SRES®) and more. I’ve had a Certified Aging in Place (CAPS) designation and am also a Certified Dementia Practitioner®(CDP). Add in the boards and groups that I’m a part of and it’s clear that I’m all in for servicing older adults and their families.

I help seniors well outside the St. Louis, MO area, and encourage anyone to call me for guidance and/or referrals. My network runs wide and deep, and it would be my pleasure to connect you with the resources you seek.

One very important lesson that I want to share. I’ve been known to get on a soapbox, when it comes to selling a home ‘as-is’, for cash, to an investor. Most investors are lovely people and they provide a needed service. However, unless a house is really distressed or the money doesn’t matter, then I think that there are better ways to go about it. When that rare home comes along that deserves to be sold this way (often for 50 cents on the dollar or less), then I bring in 3-4 investors and get them to bid against one another. This has resulted in putting tens of thousands of more dollars in my Seller’s pockets (to use for their care or their legacy). When the money is important, we’re best served to expose the property to the market (by listing it). There are a couple of ways to do that, which I can share at some other time. The KEY point – selling ‘as-is’ rarely works in the Seller’s best interest. So don’t let the idea of leaving what you don’t want in the home, closing fast, and cash, cloud your vision.”

Medical Alarms in St. Louis MO: Senior Falls Prevention

Do You Know the Top 10 Risk Factors for a Fall?

September is National Falls Prevention Month. During this month, we will be bombarded with the scary statistics of fall risk among older Americans and an overwhelming amount of information about fall prevention. We, at Around the Clock Medical Alarms, understand wholeheartedly that a fall can change everything!

Medical Alarms in St. Louis MO: Senior Falls Prevention

Medical Alarms in St. Louis MO: Senior Falls Prevention

Falls have become an epidemic in America. Falls are the leading cause of death due to injury for those over the age of 65. Falls account for 40% of all nursing home admissions. Falls are also the leading cause of injury-related emergency department visits for older adults, the major cause of hip fractures, and responsible for more than half of fatal head injuries. Approximately half of all seniors, who sustain a fall, DO NOT resume independent living. Let those scary statistics sink in….

People who fall become fearful about falling again — trapping them into a “fear of falling” cycle.  Even subtle changes can lead to another fall, as bodies adjust to the new reality of a change in gait and speed. The family members of someone who has taken a fall find themselves a little more concerned. Sometimes, a family might take unnecessary actions such as making the individual move out of their own home to live in an apartment, with family, or an assisted living community. These “well-intended” solutions are not necessarily always “good” solutions.

What things can classify someone as an individual who’s a “fall risk?”

The Missouri Alliance for Home Care adapted the following list of 10 questions, which can be used as a screening tool to determine a person who is at risk. (All questions can be answered “yes” or “no.”)

1. Are you 65+?

2. Do you have three or more medical issues?

3. Are you taking four or more medications?  Side effects from medications can sometimes increase your chance of falling.  Did you know that anti-depressants, anti-anxiety, high blood pressure, blood sugar meds, sleep aides, mood altering medications, and narcotics can increase your risk of falling?  Talk to your doctor or pharmacist, if you are using any types of medicines that could potentially cause you to fall.

4. Have you fallen in the past three months? — This includes having a “slip,” “trip,” or “near-fall,” where you were able to catch yourself prior to actually falling to the floor.  People who are worried about falling are more likely to fall again.  When you have the “fear of falling,” you are not as confident and steady on your feet. If you have had a fall, please speak to your doctor to make them aware of your concerns.  Being fitted for an assistive device (cane, walker, etc.) by a professional could make all the difference in your confidence and mobility!

5. Are you having incontinence? (i.e. “leaking urine”). Rushing to the bathroom, especially at night, increases your chance of falling.  To reduce the risk of falling, make sure to have adequate lighting, clear pathways, and allow plant of time to make the trip.

6. Are you having memory problems?

7. Is your vision causing you trouble?  Your eyes and ears are key to keeping you on your feet. Get your vision and hearing checked annually and update your eyeglasses.

8. Are there hazards in your home, such as cluttered pathways, poor lighting, or pets?  Remove tripping hazards, increase lighting, make stairs safe and install grab bars in key areas.

9. Are you experiencing a decline in your ability to move around your home? Are you less independent? Do you need assistance with bathing, dressing, and/or preparing meals?

10. Does pain limit your ability to move around?  If you are “furniture surfing,” you probably have poor balance.  Needing to push yourself up to stand up is a sign of weak leg muscles, which is a major reason for falling.  Talk to your doctor to see if they could prescribe therapy to help you build up your strength to prevent future falls.

If you answered “yes,” to four or more of the questions, then you are at risk for having a fall.

It is important to be aware that there are different things that can put you at risk for a fall. Some risks are more obvious than others — some are modifiable, while others are not.

We’ve all heard the famous quote by Benjamin Franklin, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”  If you or someone you know is falling, or is prone to fall, there are things that can be done to help prevent future falls.

For example, physical therapy can assist with pain management, which can be a big reason a senior will fall. In addition, therapy can help to keep you ambulatory to help maintain your independence. Finally, a therapist can work with you to improve your balance, strength, and range of motion, which can decrease the number of falls you could have.

One major goal for plenty of aging adults is to remain as independent as they can for as long as possible.  Talk to your family members.  Enlist their support in taking simple steps to stay safe.  Falls are not just a seniors’ issue.  Talk to your health care provider.  Ask for an assessment of your risk of falling.  Share your history of recent falls.  They cannot help, if they are not aware of the issues you are having.

A comprehensive home safety assessment performed by a trained specialist, along with some low-cost “home modifications,” — such as grab bars, changing door handles to the lever kind, building ramps, or updating the kitchen to make things more easily accessible — can serve to effectively reduce falls and fall-related injury for older adults.

We all know that not all falls can be prevented. IF you have modified your home, completed a physical therapy regime, and you are still falling, or have the fear of falling, a medic alert system might be the next thing to consider. Although a help button will not prevent a fall, it will get help if/when a fall happens. Do not become the statistic of someone who has an accidental fall and lays there for hours or days….

The mission of Around the Clock Medical Alarms is to provide a medical alarm service to the elderly and ill that will enable them to remain independent in their home – as safely as possible.
